Water -- Heals or Destroys
Water has helped me let go of harmful words, leaving me with the feeling that they have been dropped into flowing water that will take them away where no more harm can come from those words. I find the sound of water soothing. My desire to photograph rushing water, still lakes and waterfalls, large and small, made my hiking friends of many years say, "don't you have enough," or to smile with that look that said, "yes, we know" as I stopped for one more photo.
I had a mantra for dropping the words into flowing water, which could be in my shower or sink as well as at the nearby park or stream. "Take these words and send them into the far edges of the universe where they can do no harm," I said as I silently mouthed the words. Yes, the flowing stream worked best, but I can visualize the water from my faucet flowing into the river that runs through our city and beyond.
Now we have water coming in torrents, rains worthy of the Bible's flood story, destroying. Water is essential both for us and for our planet, yet how much and where it falls, we cannot control. It reminds us that good and bad are found in the same people, the same parts of nature, the same creatures. We can choose which part of our nature to use, difficult though it might be in many situations. Enjoy the beauty as you are able.
